Humans have lived in Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Canyon de Shay) for over 2,000 years. Current-day Navajo families still live and farm in the canyon and have done so since the late 1700s. The Anasazi (a Navajo word meaning "The Ancient Ones") were a wandering tribe of peoples that some believe came from Siberia over the land bridge that once existed. They wandered into the American Southwest and eventually disappeared around 1200 A.D. These ruins were the homes built by the Anasazi in Canyon de Chelly.. |
